Tropic straps are by far my favorite straps for summer. They look great on anything that’s not a dress watch, they’re as comfortable as it gets, and I think they’re criminally underrated. Everyone talks about switching to bracelets and NATO straps for summer, and maybe even regular rubber straps, but here’s three reasons why tropic straps are my go to option.
Reason 1: They Just Look Awesome
I’ll admit that I’m biased here. I’m a big fan of the 1960’s era of design for watches. Submariners, Speedmasters, Heuer Carreras, – you name it – they all ooze that 60’s style. What better way to replicate some of that magic by throwing your favorite diver on a tropic for the summer?

Re-releasing the brand’s first diver watch from the 60’s on a tropic makes sense logically, but I think that tropic straps look pretty badass on modern divers, too. They’re available in pretty much any color you can think of as well.
Reason 2: They’re Incredibly Comfortable
It doesn’t get much more comfortable than a tropic strap in summer. The vented pockets at the underside of the strap allow the wrist to breath. The small holes also assist with the process. Oris makes especially comfortable OEM tropics, which I highly recommend.
Sure, NATO, and even Perlon, straps are pretty comfy, too, but they’re prone to staying wet after they get wet. Want to go for a swim? With the tropic strap, water rolls right off and it’s dry in less than a minute.
Reason 3: They’re Extremely Durable
Not only are tropic straps waterproof, they’re incredibly durable as well. These things last forever. Last time I checked, you can still find them from the 1960’s and 1970’s on ebay (but at a much prettier penny than some of the newer ones manufactured today). Many manufactures still make them, and they can be found anywhere from Amazon.com to tropicstrap.com.
Of course you can argue bracelets are the most durable, but durability often comes at the expense of comfort. Bracelets also tend to stretch out after decades of use as well.
The tropic strap is an icon from the 1960’s, but still looks awesome today. A tropic strap can instantly add style and character to just about any dive watch, and it’ll stand out more than your average run-of-the-mill rubber strap or NATO, too.
